Gas Hose Know-How: Which Gas Hose Do I Need?
Got a new gas fryer, range or griddle on the way? Your Gas Safe registered engineer will connect it, but having the right hose ready means the job gets done first time. If you’re wondering which gas hose you need, it comes down to four things: size, length, braided or unbraided, and certification.

Start with the Connection Size
We stock Dormont hoses in ½-inch, ¾-inch, 1-inch and 1¼-inch sizes. Match the hose to the gas connection on your appliance – you’ll usually find the size in the manufacturer’s spec sheet or installation manual.
Size isn’t the whole story, though. The hose also needs enough gas flow for the appliance it’s supplying, and your Gas Safe engineer will confirm that.
Choose the Right Length
Our range comes in 1000mm, 1200mm and 1500mm lengths. You need enough hose to pull the appliance forward for cleaning, but not so much that it trails on the floor or kinks.
Dormont’s guidance is to fit the hose in a single, natural loop with no sharp bends. So measure the gap between the gas supply point and the appliance before you order.
Braided or Unbraided?
Both types share the same core: a corrugated 304 stainless steel hose with a dipped PVC coating. The smooth coating is easy to wipe down, with fewer crevices for grease and dirt to collect in.
Braided versions add an extra reinforcing layer for added strength and durability. The right choice depends on the appliance and the installation, so if you’re unsure, ask your engineer.
Why the Quick Disconnect Matters
Kitchens need deep cleaning, and appliances need servicing. The quick disconnect coupling allows the appliance to be disconnected from the gas supply when it needs to be moved. Its flat-faced design also helps keep dirt out of the connection.
Don’t Leave the Restraining Cable in the Box
It’s tempting to treat the cable as an optional extra. It isn’t.
The restraint limits how far the appliance can be pulled forward, so the strain goes on the cable rather than the hose and its connections. Dormont recommends fitting it slightly shorter than the hose, and checking both as part of regular maintenance.
