Can I Install This Myself? A Guide to Commercial Catering Equipment Installation.

When a new piece of commercial catering equipment arrives, the temptation to get it connected and running as quickly as possible is understandable. For equipment that simply plugs into a standard 13 amp socket, that is perfectly fine. For almost everything else in a commercial kitchen, it is not — and the consequences of getting it wrong range from an invalidated warranty to a serious safety incident.

This guide explains why, by equipment type, and where to find the right person for the job.

The 13 Amp Exception

Some commercial catering equipment runs on a standard 13 amp plug. If the manufacturer specifies 13 amp and the equipment comes with a plug fitted, you can connect it yourself. Everything else in this guide covers hardwired, three phase, gas and refrigerant-based equipment. For all of those, self-installation is either illegal, dangerous or both.

If you are in any doubt about which category your equipment falls into, check the specification sheet or call your supplier before you do anything.

Gas Equipment — Gas Safe is Not Optional

Any commercial catering equipment connected to a gas supply must go through a Gas Safe registered engineer for installation and commissioning. This is a legal requirement, not a recommendation. An unregistered person carrying out gas work is breaking the law, and any insurance claim or liability arising from that work will not stand.

Gas Safe registration covers different categories of work — domestic gas is not the same as commercial catering gas, and mobile catering (food trucks, trailers and similar) is a separate category again. Make sure the engineer you use holds registration for the specific type of work required. You can check any engineer’s registration and qualifications at gassaferegister.co.uk.

Beyond the legal requirement, commercial gas equipment operates at pressures and flow rates that demand correct commissioning to perform safely and efficiently. An incorrectly commissioned gas range or fryer presents a fire and carbon monoxide risk. It is not a shortcut worth taking.

Hardwired and Three Phase Electrical Equipment

Most heavy commercial catering equipment — combi ovens, large refrigeration units, commercial dishwashers, cooking ranges — runs on a hardwired connection or three phase supply rather than a standard plug. A qualified electrician must do this work. No exceptions.

In the UK, electrical installation work in commercial premises must comply with BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations). Look for engineers registered with NICEIC or NAPIT — both run searchable registers at niceic.com and napit.org.uk respectively.

Not all premises have three phase supply. If your equipment needs three phase and your building only has single phase, talk to your electrician and potentially your network operator before you order. You cannot resolve that on installation day.

Incorrect electrical installation does not just invalidate the warranty. It creates a genuine risk of fire, electric shock and equipment failure. Commercial kitchens are demanding electrical environments and the work needs to reflect that.

What Happens if You Self-Install

Beyond the legal and safety issues, self-installation of equipment that requires a qualified engineer will almost certainly invalidate your warranty. Manufacturers are clear on this — incorrect installation voids cover, and no amount of explaining will reinstate it after the fact. The cost of a qualified installation is considerably less than the cost of an out-of-warranty repair or replacement.

Getting the Right People for the Job

To summarise, here is where to find qualified engineers for each type of work:

Gas installation and commissioning — Gas Safe Register: gassaferegister.co.uk

Electrical installation — NICEIC: niceic.com or NAPIT: napit.org.uk

At Anglia Catering Equipment we have our own team of qualified Gas Safe and electrical engineers, including Gas Safe cover for mobile catering. We can arrange installation and commissioning alongside your equipment purchase. Call us on 01379 641223 and we’ll point you in the right direction.
