Buying Graded or Refurbished Isn’t Just About the Price

Most people think of graded and refurbished stock as a way to save money. That’s true enough. You get the same performance for a lower price, with only a cosmetic mark or two to show for it. But there are two other reasons worth knowing about. Sometimes graded is the only way to get hold of a unit that isn’t available new right now. And with refurbished equipment, you’ll sometimes find extras included that a new order wouldn’t come with.

When New Stock Runs Dry

Popular models sell out. Manufacturers run behind on production. A shipment gets delayed at the docks. Suddenly you’re looking at six weeks on the fridge you’d settled on, rather than next week. That gap matters. It matters more for a kitchen mid-refit, or a business waiting to open its doors. A scratch on the side panel matters far less.

This is where graded earns its place, not as the budget option, but as the available one. Whatever’s sitting in our warehouse right now is ready to go out this week. That’s true regardless of what’s happening with production or shipping elsewhere.

Why the Cosmetic Damage Rarely Matters

Most graded units are exactly what they look like: unused or barely used stock. It came back for reasons that have nothing to do with how well it works. A customer ordered the wrong size. Transit left a dent in a box. Someone changed their mind before they’d even plugged it in. None of that touches the compressor, the shelving, or the warranty. It just means we can’t sell the unit as brand new, so we price it accordingly.

For back-of-house equipment especially, where nobody’s looking at the side panel anyway, that distinction barely registers day to day.

Worth Checking, Not Guaranteed

It’s worth being upfront about the limits here too. Graded stock changes by the week. We can’t promise the exact model you’re after will be sitting there when you call. Still, it’s always worth asking, particularly if we’ve already quoted you a long wait on something new. More than once, a customer has rung about a unit stuck on backorder for months. They’ve found a graded version of the very same model already sitting in our warehouse.

Sometimes the Extras Are Included

This is something many buyers don’t consider. Some of our refurbished Rational combi ovens come with accessories included, such as stands, roll-in racks or oven trolleys. Bought separately, these can add a significant amount to the overall cost. When the package already includes them, the deal can be even better value than the headline price suggests.

It’s worth looking past the sticker price. Ask exactly what comes with the unit before you compare it against a new one costed from scratch.

What to Ask Before You Commit to a Wait

If a new unit comes with a quote of several weeks, pause before accepting that as the only option. Ask us whether a graded or ex-display version exists, even if you didn’t spot it listed on the website. Graded stock turns over faster than our pages can keep up. It costs nothing but a phone call to find out. Just bear in mind: graded units carry a 12-month parts-only warranty. That’s less than the fuller parts-and-labour cover you’d get on something new. Weigh that against the time saved.

The same goes the other way, too. Spotted a graded unit you like the look of? Check the cosmetic details before you buy, not after. Ask us what grade it carries, whether we can send photos, and what specifically sets it apart from new. We’re always happy to answer that clearly before you commit.

The Short Version

If the new unit you want is stuck on a lead time, don’t assume you’re stuck too. A graded version might already be sitting here, ready to go out this week rather than next quarter. If you’re looking at refurbished equipment, ask what’s included. Compare that against a new order costed from scratch.

Call us on 01379 641223. We’ll check what’s currently available — new, graded or refurbished. Then you won’t commit to a wait, or a price, you didn’t need to.
