British Sandwich Week – A Toast to Our Favourite Fillings.

Butty, sarnie, piece, bap, cob, barm — whatever you call it, this week we celebrate it. British Sandwich Week (19–25 May 2025) is the UK’s annual homage to the nation’s most beloved handheld meal.

Organised by the British Sandwich & Food to Go Association, the event showcases the cultural and economic importance of the sandwich, from artisan delis to supermarket chillers and school lunchboxes. It’s a week of national appreciation for the grab-and-go classic that fuels office workers, builders, schoolchildren, and everyone in between.

The Story Behind the Celebration

British Sandwich Week was established to highlight not just our love for sandwiches, but also the massive contribution the industry makes to the UK economy. With billions of sandwiches sold annually and an ever-growing market for innovation, the celebration promotes quality, hygiene, sustainability, and creativity across the sector.

Each year sees a new campaign theme — “Seven Days, Seven Sandwiches” for 2025 — with participating retailers and cafés serving up inventive daily specials and sandwich-inspired promotions.

By the Numbers: A National Obsession

3.5 billion sandwiches are consumed annually in the UK

The sandwich industry is worth over £8 billion

Chicken, bacon, and egg top the charts for most popular fillings

The average Brit eats more than 18,000 sandwiches in their lifetime

With numbers like that, it’s clearly more than just a snack.

Regional Flavours and Local Lingo

Where you are in the UK often determines what you call your sandwich — and sometimes what you put in it:

Butty – Found in the North (ideal with bacon or chips)

Sarnie – Common in Wales and the West Country

Piece – Scottish term, often paired with jam (a “jeely piece”)

Bap – A soft bread roll, perfect for breakfast fillings

Cob – Midlands word for a filled bread roll

Barm – Manchester staple

Stottie – North Eastern flat roll, made for bold fillings

Few foods are as woven into the fabric of daily British life as the sandwich.

Classic Favourites & Modern Twists

British sandwich culture spans the classic ploughman’s to trending vegan banh mi and sushi rolls. While the prawn mayo, BLT, and cheese & pickle never lose their charm, Sandwich Week often inspires chefs and foodies alike to experiment — with flavour, format, and even bread types.

It’s not just about tradition. It’s also about reinvention.

And If You’re Thirsty…

Conveniently, today is also International Tea Day — a fitting moment to raise a mug to the nation’s other great love. Because whether you’re tucking into a bacon bap or a cucumber sandwich, there’s always time for a proper brew.
As the nation celebrates, it’s the perfect time to ask: what’s in your sandwich today?
